Exciting weeks full of sea and sunshine on the paradisiacal island of Malta lie behind 13 apprentices from the second year of training at DRÄXLMAIER. The future foreign language industrial clerks from Vilsbiburg spent four weeks living and working on Malta. In this interview, the two apprentices Sophia and Magdalena tell us how they experienced their language stay on the island.

What was your everyday school and work life like in Malta?

Sophia: Our internships were very varied. Most of us worked in childcare at a hotel. But there were other options too, such as working at an animal shelter, in a restaurant, or at a golf club.

Magdalena: We also received intensive English lessons in small groups. The courses were organized by the European School of English (ESE), which also provided the apartments where we lived with our classmates.

Evenings spent together with the class were a regular feature of the program: the group would meet on the roof terrace of the Valley View Apartments.

What challenges did you face in everyday life?

Magdalena: We were given a bus pass at the start of our trip, but the buses were usually overcrowded and didn't always run at the scheduled times. Instead, most of us used taxi services such as Uber or Bolt. That always worked perfectly and was also relatively inexpensive.

The apprentices spent a lot of their free time in the capital city of Valletta.

How did you spend your free time and evenings in Malta?

Magdalena: We spent a lot of time at the seaside and visited several different beaches. Another popular destination for many of us was the capital city of Valletta. The souvenir shops and excellent food there were always worth a visit.

Sophia: In the evenings, we liked to get together for game nights on the terrace or in one of the bars in nearby Paceville to end our days together with our friends.

Turquoise blue waters of the Blue Lagoon on Comino
The boat trip to Blue Lagoon Comino left a lasting impression on Magdalena and Sophia's class.

What was your best experience?

Sophia: That was definitely the boat trip to Blue Lagoon and Crystal Lagoon. We were very impressed by the crystal-clear turquoise water! We also had the opportunity to go snorkeling, ride a speedboat, and try out the food spots on Comino.

Magdalena: The Blue Lagoon was also my absolute highlight of the entire trip. I would also recommend everyone to spend at least one evening at Café del Mar to watch the sunset over the sea.

What is your conclusion after four weeks in Malta: would you recommend a language study trip to other apprentices?

Magdalena: Absolutely! The trip not only improved our English skills, but also strengthened the class community. We were also all very happy with our internships and working hours - the four weeks in Malta flew by.

Sophia: We had an incredibly good time in Malta. I think we all learned a lot of new things: linguistically, culturally and professionally. The opportunity to live and work abroad for four weeks was a great experience for all of us!
