DRÄXLMAIER opens first battery plant

17. May 2019 Supplier to produce battery system for Porsche Taycan at new site in Sachsenheim, Germany.

The DRÄXLMAIER Group will start the series production of the powerful 800-volt complete battery system for the purely electrical Porsche Taycan this month. For that purpose, the supplier has set up a sophisticated production facility in Sachsenheim near Stuttgart, Germany.

Innovation out of tradition

"The mobility of the future is one of the greatest challenges of our time," said Dr. Martin Gall, chief technology officer at DRÄXLMAIER Group, Dr. Martin Gall. "The automobile industry is going through an historically technological change, and electromobility is an important megatrend."

DRÄXLMAIER recognized this development at an early stage and has been building battery systems as early as 2009 when its experts made the initial prototypes for battery systems. This was followed by numerous concept orders from premium brands for high-voltage batteries for plug-in hybrid vehicles and electric vehicles.

Ten years later, the supplier finally opened up its first battery plant in Sachsenheim, where a 100,000 sq. foot production hall houses highly automated assembly lines to build the battery modules for the Taycan. Once the modules have been set up automatically, further parts are mounted before each battery will undergo a series of comprehensive tests. In addition to the battery production, the site also includes a development office for modern battery systems.

Shaping mobility of future

"We have gone through a very intensive development period," said Sabine Hucke, site manager of the DRÄXLMAIER plant in Sachsenheim. "The whole team at the site is now  looking forward to the start of series production.

Hucke added that setting up a site from scratch strengthened teamwork among the DRÄXLMAIER team in Sachsenheim.

"It has produced a very special sort of team spirit," she said.

The DRÄXLMAIER Group develops and produces vehicle-specific, individually configurable high-voltage battery systems and individual components for high-voltage storage. The DRÄXLMAIER-made E-module includes all vital components, from charging sockets and HV electrical wiring systems, right up to a broad variety of electronic parts that all provide intelligent measuring, distribution and protection, as well as reliable contacting. Like its other products, all battery system solutions are produced in-house at DRÄXLMAIER – from development right up to production.

"With our battery systems, we are helping the carmakers make the mobility of the future safer, more comfortable and more sustainable," said Gall.
